No living being, least of all animals, should be deprived of its freedom. Like humans, animals deserve the chance to roam, play, and live fully. But that wasn’t the case for Julia, a sweet dog who spent her days chained up in a deserted yard. When she first saw us, she ran over as if she had never seen food before, her eyes wide with hunger and desperation. After she eagerly finished her meal, we took her to the vet clinic. Once there, Julia seemed more relaxed, though still nervous. She was in a new place with strange faces and smells, but the vets and staff treated her kindly. As they examined her, she started to realize that this was a step toward the help she desperately needed. The main issue became clear: Julia was paralyzed from the waist down. Her back legs were completely immobile, and she couldn’t stand or walk without help. She could only move with her front legs, a condition that made her dependent on others for everything.

Because it was obvious that Julia's situation was critical, we decided to take her to a neurologist so that she could have a more in-depth evaluation. The expectation was that the specialist would identify the reason for her paralysis and provide a treatment strategy for her condition. Following a battery of examinations, the neurologist discovered something concerning: a disc or obstruction that was pressing on Julia's spinal cord, which was most likely the reason for her feeling paralyzed. Surgery was scheduled to be performed immediately in order to alleviate the pressure and restore her mobility.

The operation went off without a hitch. Julia was sleepy and confused when she awoke, but as the effects of the anesthesia began to wear off, she gradually became conscious of her presence in the world. Everyone had high hopes that the patient would make a full recovery, but what they found out next was shocking. There was not a herniated disc that caused Julia to become paralyzed; rather, it was a gunshot that became stuck in her spine. The terrible tragedy of her life was further complicated by the fact that she had been shot by an unknown person. The road to rehabilitation for Julia would be a rather long one. She started down the path to recovery by achieving seemingly insignificant but significant triumphs, such as waving her tail or attempting to stand. She still required continual help because she was unable to urinate on her own, despite the fact that she was showing signs of recovery. Together, Julia's unwavering commitment and the tireless efforts of the team paid off over the course of two months. She was able to regain complete control of her rear legs, which was a significant achievement in her recuperation.

An unforgettable experience was taking in the sight of Julia frolicking around in the park, her tail wagging. The transition was incredible; she had gone from being a pet that was shackled and helpless to being a dog that was full of life and enthusiasm. Finding Julia a loving home for the rest of her life was the final stage, and soon long, a compassionate woman took her in as her own. Now that she had this opportunity, she could spend the rest of her life in joy, surrounded by affection, just as she deserved.
